Wuthering Heights**(tv) I have a friend who gets cable the first part of the year, specifically to watch Masterpiece Theatre Classics series. We LOVED the Jane Austen movies last year. This year...yikes. Some seriously downer movies. Charles Dickens is coming up soon, and I'm just not sure I'm gonna be able to do it. But, maybe I need to give him another chance. My book club likes to read a book then discuss and watch the movie. I wonder if we'll try any Dickens this spring.
Anyway, onto Wuthering Heights. I finally read this book two or three years ago. I was looking forward to reading it because it has been touted as this passionate love story. Ugh. I HATED it!!! I mean, I guess it's good that it made me have such strong emotions, but I really do not understand why this is such a noted piece of literature. I think it is such a horrible story. The main characters are so selfish and they totally destroy everyone around them. I feel they never really came to their just desserts, either...death was too good for them both. I suppose Bronte tried to sum it up with a bit of a happy ending for the next generation, but it wasn't enough for me.
I really debated watching the movie because I hate the story and the characters so much, but I watched a little bit one night, and got sucked in to watching the rest of it. I will say, in this adaptation I feel they let Cathy off pretty easy. I remember thinking she was just as bad as Heathcliff, but in the movie she was portrayed more of victim. Okay, I guess the movie itself was pretty well-done, although they sexed it up quite a bit. I just hate that story. Enough. I am done with that spiteful miserable Heathcliff and idiot Cathy. I don't know if I can recommend it or not...

I hated the book, too. And I remember Bella in one of the Twilight series books comparing her and Edward to Heathcliff and Catherine. UGG! What a horrible story to compare one's love story too. Doom.
That didn't stop me from recording the Masterpiece Theater version. It is on my DVR this moment to watch. So is the new Tess of the D'Urbevilles. I didn't like that story when I read it in High School, either, and I'm hoping time and maturity will change my mind.
Also, I read 'North and South' after I watched the movie. The movie is very close to the book, although the endings are a little different as to where they take place. I liked both, but I don't think you have to read the book first on this one.
What? I thought you liked Tess? I wonder why I thought that? Anyway, I've gotta find my copy so I can read it. Speaking of finding books, I found Mr. Wentworth's Diary...now it's just a matter of getting to the post office. (FYI-I still have the baby gift I got Courtney's little Rachel, yeah I'm not gonna send it now-but I've had it packaged up for what, a year and a half. I hope the book has better luck.)
Um, I still have a baby gift for Ellie. I guess we are all a little bit behind... :)
Speaking of 'Tess of the D'Urbyvilles', I think I still have the school's copy of the book. I don't know how it happened, but somehow it never got returned. Of all the books to accidently hang on to...
