Dr. Mom, I am not.

I have a really hard time deciding if my kids are too sick for school, sick enough to go to the doctor, etc.  Generally, I wait it out to see how things are in a few hours/days.  The past few days my decisions have been no good.

Thursday, Cade had red, itchy eyes...allergies?  Aidan and I have allergies, so maybe Cade's getting some, too.  Go to school.  About an hour later the nurse calls and asks me to pick him up-she thinks it's pink eye.  Call the doctor, get some eye drops, quarantine for a day.  Okay.

Friday, Aidan has red, itchy eyes.  Pink eye or allergies?  Stay home from school.  By about noon I finally decide it's just allergies.

Weekend-we're all good.

Sunday, Aidan complains a bit about not feeling well and goes to sleep a lot faster than usual.  I chalk it up to being sad about Dad leaving again.

Monday, Aidan has a sore throat and maybe a small fever (I have little confidence in my cheapish thermometer).  Stay home.  Aidan starts playing football and acting fine, I ask if he wants to go to school, "Sure," he says.  Go to school.  (Two hours late.)  About 1 1/2 hours later the office calls and says he has a fever and doesn't feel well.  Whoops.  Home again.

And yes, he is pretty sick, much more so than this morning.  Now, the most sad part of the whole thing...this is Aidan's last week of school, which he'll probably miss most, if not all of AND he'll miss his first field trip of the year AND my name was drawn to be a chaperone...it was going to be my first field trip, too.  We are sooo sad.  Well, I am.  I haven't broken the news to Aidan yet-he will be soooo sad.  Not to mention... too sick for school, but sick enough for the doctor?  I guess I'll give it a day or so.  :)

Yea!! I'm so excited you decided to join the blog world!

Major, major bummer about the field trip. That is so rotten for both of you. I hope Aiden gets feeling better soon.

By the way, Darren and I LOVE the idea of going with you to North Carolina to continue the BBQ tour. Darren started talking about finding a vacation rental on the beach and everything. I don't know specifically what town you were thinking, but I've always wanted to visit Myrtle Beach. Chapel Hill would be cool, too, but you were thinking just a weekend, right? :)

Poor Aidan! I'm sad about the timing for him. I never know what to do about illness. I usually worry too much, but then also avoid the doctor whenever possible. It's my parenting style: overprotective negligence...

Lori, I love that parenting style! Made me laugh. Thanks for your willingness to help us out-have fun at the theater!

Brenda, yeah just a weekend. I have no idea where...we have to revive our BBQ research (which I believe originated with a show we saw years ago on the food network, or maybe it was the travel channel). It's been a fun quest.
